The BX ring has a hollow cross-section. When pressurised, the ring expands radially outward against the flange groove walls, increasing sealing contact force in direct proportion to line pressure. This self-energising behaviour means the BX seal improves as pressure increases. The BX profile requires dedicated BX ring joint grooves machined to API 6A Appendix F dimensional tolerances — it is NOT interchangeable with R or RX grooves.
BX rings must be machined to API 6A Appendix F tolerances — tighter than standard RTJ by a factor of two. Most Indian workshop equipment cannot hold these tolerances consistently. A BX ring that is out of tolerance by 0.05mm will not seal at 15,000 psi.
API 6A PSL 1/2/3 documentation is mandatory — material traceability, hardness certification, dimensional inspection report, and, in some cases, third-party witnessing. Indian manufacturers cannot consistently produce this documentation package.
BX gaskets for sour gas service must meet NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 requirements — sulphide stress cracking resistance certification. For Hastelloy and Super Duplex BX rings, this requires heat treatment and hardness testing to specific protocols not performed by most Indian machine shops.
